Up-and-Down Procedures for Approximating Optimal Designs

چکیده
Computerized adaptive testing has many advantages over the traditional paper-and-pencil tests. Algorithms developed for item selections focus on exclusively item response functions. However, person-response functions are more desirable when not all item characteristics are known. When targeting a single percentile, median difficulty level is an estimate of the person’s ability level. Often however, estimating more than one percentile or the entire person-response curve is desirable. This study considers optimal designs that either minimize the variance of one percentile estimate or a function of the variance-covariance eclipse jointly for all parameter estimates. Due to the problem that an optimal design for nonlinear models depends on unknown parameters, sequential up-and-down designs for approximating optimal designs are considered. Examples are provided to illustrate the efficiency of the procedures.

Retailer’s optimal credit period and cycle time in a supply chain for deteriorating items with up-stream and down-stream trade credits
In practice, the supplier often offers the retailers a trade credit period M and the retailer in turn provides a trade credit period N to her/his customer to stimulate sales and reduce inventory. From the retailer’s perspective, granting trade credit not only increases sales and revenue but also increases opportunity cost (i.e., the capital opportunity loss during credit period) and defau...
متن کاملEffect of Insulated Up and Down Lid Motion on the Heat Transfer of a Lid-Driven Cavity with an attached fin
This study investigates the effect of lid motion on the optimal characteristics a thin rectangular fin attached on the hot wall of a square lid-driven cavity with active vertical walls. The optimal fin position is studied for Richardson numbers of 0.1-10. The effect of mounting a rectangular fin with a thermal conductivity of 1 and 1000 on minimization and maximization of heat transfer through ...
متن کاملModel-Based Classi cation Trees
The construction of classiication trees is nearly always top-down, locally optimal and data-driven. Such recursive designs are often globally ineecient, for instance in terms of the mean depth necessary to reach a given classiication rate. We consider statistical models for which exact global optimization is feasible, and thereby demonstrate that recursive and global procedures may result in ve...
متن کاملDesign of Optimal Process Flowsheet for Fractional Crystallization Separation Process
A procedure is presented that synthesizes fractional crystallization separation processes to obtain pure solids from multi-component solutions. The method includes a procedure to generate a network flow model to identify alternative process designs for fractional crystallization. The main advantage of this systematic procedure with respect to other reported procedures is using non-equilibri...
متن کاملTHE EFFECTS OF INITIAL SAMPLING AND PENALTY FUNCTIONS IN OPTIMAL DESIGN OF TRUSSES USING METAHEURISTIC ALGORITHMS
Although Genetic algorithm (GA), Ant colony (AC) and Particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO) have already been extended to various types of engineering problems, the effects of initial sampling beside constraints in the efficiency of algorithms, is still an interesting field. In this paper we show that, initial sampling with a special series of constraints play an important role in the conv...
